The 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat — are the universal standards for evaluating the quality and value of a diamond. Each factor plays a unique role in determining a diamond’s overall beauty and rarity.

Cut is perhaps the most important of the four, as it directly affects how a diamond reflects light. A well-cut diamond will sparkle more brilliantly and appear more lively than one with a poor cut, even if other characteristics are equal.

Colour refers to the presence of a yellow or brown tint in white diamonds. The GIA colour grading scale ranges from D (colourless and most rare) to Z (light yellow). The closer a diamond is to colourless, the more valuable it tends to be.

Clarity assesses the presence of internal features (inclusions) or external marks (blemishes), which are natural byproducts of a diamond’s formation. While most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, higher clarity grades indicate fewer and smaller imperfections.

Carat measures a diamond’s weight and often correlates with size. While larger diamonds are generally more valuable, carat should always be considered alongside the other three Cs for a truly beautiful and well-balanced stone.
