Do sapphires come in colours other than blue?

Yes. Although blue is the best-known colour, natural sapphires occur in almost every colour, including teal, green, parti, yellow, pink, peach, purple, orange, Padparadscha, white and even rare colour-changing varieties. The only exception is red corundum, which belongs to the same mineral family as sapphire but is classified as ruby.

Different sapphire-producing regions are known for their own distinctive colour characteristics. Australian sapphires are particularly admired for their rich teal, green and parti colours, while Sri Lankan (Ceylon) sapphires are renowned for their vivid royal blue, cornflower blue, pastel shades and the rare pink-orange Padparadscha sapphire. Which sapphire colour is best?

What is the rarest colour of sapphire?

Some sapphire colours are considerably rarer than others. Among the rarest are Padparadscha sapphires, prized for their delicate blend of pink and orange, along with exceptional unheated royal blue sapphires and certain highly sought-after Australian parti sapphires displaying remarkable natural colour zoning.

Rarity is only one aspect of a sapphire's value, however. Colour, cut, clarity, size, origin and overall beauty all contribute to what makes a gemstone exceptional.

What's the difference between Australian and Ceylon sapphires?

Australian and Ceylon (Sri Lankan) sapphires each have their own distinctive beauty, shaped by the unique geological conditions in which they formed over millions of years.

Australian sapphires are celebrated for their rich teal, green and parti colours, often displaying multiple colours and distinctive colour zoning within a single gemstone. Ceylon sapphires are typically brighter in tone and are renowned for their vivid royal blue, cornflower blue, Padparadscha and delicate pastel colours, often with exceptional brilliance.

Neither origin is inherently better - the right choice depends on your personal style and colour preferences. At Lizunova, we work with both Australian and Ceylon sapphires, selecting each gemstone individually for its beauty, colour, cut and individuality rather than its origin alone.

Are sapphires durable enough for everyday wear?

Yes. Sapphires rank 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them one of the hardest natural gemstones. Combined with a well-designed setting, they are exceptionally durable and an excellent choice for jewellery that's worn every day.

As with any fine jewellery, we recommend removing your ring during activities that may expose it to heavy knocks or unnecessary wear, helping to keep it beautiful for generations.

Are your sapphires natural?

Yes. We specialise in natural sapphires, individually selected for their beauty, colour, clarity and individuality. We work only with natural and ethically sourced gemstones.

Are sapphires treated?

Most natural sapphires on the market have undergone standard heat treatment to improve their colour and clarity. This permanent enhancement is widely accepted within the gemstone industry and does not affect the sapphire's durability. We offer both heated and unheated sapphires, with unheated gemstones being considerably rarer. We'll always explain whether a sapphire has been heated so you can make an informed decision.

Are your sapphires ethically sourced?

Yes. Ethical sourcing is central to our business. We work with trusted Australian lapidaries and reputable international gemstone suppliers who share our commitment to responsible practices and transparency.

Yes. You're welcome to visit our Sydney studio (by appointment) to view a selection of sapphires and discuss your ideas. We also work with clients throughout Australia and internationally, providing detailed photographs and videos to help you compare different gemstones remotely.

Do you sell loose sapphires?

No. We specialise in bespoke jewellery and source sapphires exclusively for our custom jewellery clients as part of the design process.
