What exactly is a sapphire?

A sapphire is a precious stone from the corundum family, known for its exceptional hardness and vibrant range of colours.

Though traditionally associated with rich royal blue tones, sapphires come in a huge spectrum of hues. The only colour corundum can't be is red - that's classified as a ruby! Sapphires are durable, ranking at 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, just below diamonds, making them a reliable choice for everyday fine jewellery, such as engagement rings.

Do sapphires come in colours other than blue?

Beside blue, which sapphires are traditionally known for, these beautiful gems come in all shades of teal, green, pink, yellow, peach, Padparadscha, grey, brown, orange and purple. They also come in white (colourless) and black, as well as bi colour, or parti - sapphires that display more than one colour.

What’s the best sapphire colour for my skin tone?

Cool skin tones suit blue, green, teal, parti and vibrant yellow sapphires. Warmer tones pair well with all shades of yellow, pink, blue, teal, parti, green or peach hues.

What’s the difference between Australian sapphires and Ceylon (Sri Lankan) sapphires?

Due to the differing geological conditions, each region produces its own distinct colours. Australian sapphires tend to have deeper, darker blue-teal hues, vibrant greens and yellows, while Ceylon sapphires are known for their bright, richly saturated blues, sunny yellows, pinks that range from pastel to magenta, oranges, lilacs and purples.

How do sapphires compare to other precious stones?

Sapphire gemstones are not only beautiful, they’re also practical. They resist scratches better than other gems (apart from diamonds) and offer colour variety that diamonds don’t. Compared to other gems, such as emeralds, tourmalines, tanzanites or opals, sapphires are significantly more durable and better suited for daily wear.

Why are some sapphires more expensive than others?

Factors include colour, clarity, size and origin. Vivid royal blue, vivid cornflower blue and well-saturated Padparadscha sapphires are among the most rare and valuable.

How do I know if a sapphire is natural or lab-created?

Gemological certificates and reputable jewellers will clarify origin and authenticity. Parti sapphires (sapphires displaying two or more colours) cannot be created in a lab.
